It’s been a fortnight of extremes. Hundreds and thousands of jobs go out the door at a variety of UK and global businesses, and elsewhere
announcements are made about the potential hiring of outrageous numbers of people.
A look at some of the mainstream media suggests that recruiters may once again be relegated to the status of favourite punching bag when frustrated jobseekers fail to find work. A reader column in one of the free London evening papers bemoaned recent experiences with recruiters who tried to twist the writer’s arm to take jobs she didn’t want, and seemed too junior to understand her employment needs. There’s an implicit warning here for our industry when we most need goodwill.
Not every candidate will get a dream job through a recruiter, but we must rise to the occasion now more than ever to be perceived as professionals with expertise to share. Do your best ever work. Professionalise your teams. We need our industry heroes to stand up now.
