The 1990s supermodel Linda Evangelista was once quoted as saying that she didn’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day. She’s got lots of company in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire where Britons who could work choose not to, as a BBC documentary has revealed.

Our conversations last week with recruiters in Wisbech underscored the sad truth that the UK’s ’unwilling to work’ population is indeed alive and well, and keeping immigrants to the UK in jobs that won’t make them rich but keep them off the dole. Shame on the couch cowboys and cowgirls whose benefits we’re providing. Shame on us for continuing to provide them. And ’well done’ to Wisbech’s professional recruiters for filling the vacancies with willing workers.

Well done, too, to all of the entrants who took pride in their achievements over a tough year and entered Recruiter’s Awards for Excellence 2010, supported by new headline sponsor Innovate CV. The shortlist includes a dazzling array of the UK’s best recruiters, both internal and external and their initiatives. And many entries which did not make the shortlist also reflected real achievement and true grit. Clearly, we will have many exceptional stories to share with you, the recruitment community, over the months to come.
