Extended leave is unrealistic

It is simply unrealistic for small businesses to have staff, all of whom are key to an SME's operation, taking extended leave through government legislation. There should be a cut-off in the size of a company as to when this can be applied. Those who dream up these schemes have zero consideration for the SME working environment. If they take time off, it matters little to the bottom line of their government department, but to a firm with, for example, less than 20 employees it can mean life or death. Do they care? I think not.

Media hype

I work in recruitment and certain sectors, especially banking recruitment, have been affected by the credit crunch. However, a lot of people are becoming negative and panicking, which I feel is due to media hype. If you are a business professional, you need to weather the storm.

Temp benefits

'Dispensations' do not allow the claiming of expenses, rather they are a means by which companies remove the need to declare certain expenses as agreed with HMRC. The consultation document relates to tax relief claimed for travel expenses and has nothing to do with dispensations.

CV Lies

If you are an employer interested in CV fraud, then the Powerchex Annual Pre-employment Screening Survey 2008 is worth a look — just type 'powerchex' into Google and click on the link.
