Vodafone setting good example on age issues

Published: 06 August 2008

Yet another evidence-based vindication that mature employees in general bring real value add to the workplace ("Mature workers are happiest workers," recruiter.co.uk, 18 July 2008).

Vodafone is to be commended by all concerned for their support for their older staff, and the enlightened age positive attitude to what is a growing pool of talent — you cannot halt the demographic changes affecting most Western nations, including the UK.

My organisation, Aged2Excel, was founded on the core principle that people should be judged on their skills, competence and ability to do the job, and not their age. We all have a role to play in breaking down the age discrimination barriers, promoting healthy living and supporting those in and out of work who need to be trained or developed to fufil their potential.

This can be achieved by employers, individuals and other stakeholders adopting a holistic age-management approach on issues such as advertising, recruitment, selection and retention, training, development, and health and wellbeing.

Congratulations to Vodafone — let's hope we can report more age-positive stories.
