I am writing in response to your recent article on the Top Wealth Generating Careers Report 2008 (recruiter.co.uk, 10 July 2008), which stated that recruiters in the City take home the fourth-highest average annual income.
It seems to me this report is heavily skewed towards senior staff in privileged positions, painting a far more moneyed picture of the recruitment industry than is actually true.
Take, for example, the small or medium-sized agency that works at the coal face placing pickers and packers, as opposed to CEOs and other senior business people. I very much doubt they would be anywhere near an 'average' wage of £500,000!
There is a huge disparity between senior roles such as this and the average recruiter, and, as we surely should have learned from the causes of recent economic turmoil, being paid a disproportionately large sum of money doesn't necessarily tally directly with ability.
More needs to be done to ensure that those in the early stages of their recruitment career are encouraged to remain in the industry, rather than those at the top rewarding themselves.
