I have just seen your article on Age Discrimination (recruiter.co.uk, 18 June). I have just spent four months in the recruitment fashion industry and the opinion in this recruitment sector is that it is more than acceptable to discriminate against someone on the basis of their age, as why would a 48-year-old want or have the capability of designing clothes for teenage girls?
Sexism is rife as well, with clients constantly asking for women-only or vice versa, and the MD of the company does not even bat an eyelid.
I have spent nine years working for corporate commercial agencies where every 'i' is dotted etc — and then I've worked for two independents, where basically the attitude is they don't care as long as they get the fee! Clients can say what they like.
I addressed this with the MD of one company where I was undertaking a contract, as the consultants were being discriminatory when advertising jobs (not their fault as not a single person had ever undertaken any type of training on legislation). When I tried to advise them about laws I was promptly told my contract would not be renewed as the gentleman at the helm (who, may I add, had never worked in recruitment) felt I was challenging his role as MD!
With the number of independents across the country — and this is the experience I have personally had working in two — it is no wonder recruitment agencies get the bad rep we do.
