Diary of... Chris Batten, Managing director, Acumin Consulting

Published: 09 July 2008

Monday
I get in for 8am, which is early for me. I have a deal to close and need to meet with the managers to discuss the strategies in place for filling the urgent internal headcounts on their teams. With the deal safely in and the operations bit surprisingly straight forward I am feeling pleased with myself in time for our 10.30 weekly meeting. The managers tell us we're well over target for the month already and a very healthy pipeline to close over the coming days, so we're as pleased as punch.

Tuesday
I have a local client visit this morning, which turns into one of those 'client becomes candidate' conversations and takes three hours. I spend the afternoon with our marketing manager and European consultant planning our trip to Germany next Wednesday and then with our solicitor to discuss a contract for a possible non-exec board member. On leaving, he asks where the nearest taxi rank is and I tell him there's a bus stop opposite - I'm sure I'll get invoiced for it anyway, plus 15% of course!

Wednesday
Two client visits in the Thames Valley, which is lucky because the Blackwall Tunnel's closed. The first goes very well — a very interesting security vendor. The second went as expected. They've just signed an outsourced agreement. It was pleasant enough, but I decide to knock it on the head as they're playing hardball at a 15% contingency fee.

Thursday
I arrive at the office early and have a quick scan in my inbox. This afternoon, we confirm which topics are to form a series of Podcasts I've been roped in to doing for an information security forum — the first of which is to be recorded next Tuesday. I'm scared! The first is 'Application Security', a subject I have to admit I know nothing about. The second one, 'Security Awareness', I reckon I can get by after a few conversations with some clients, but the first one is worrying me.

Friday
Friday morning and I'm a new man. I enter the office whistling and very proud of myself. We had a great turnout at our monthly client forum — RANT — last night and the presentation went down a storm. The best news though — I've managed to snare an application security expert in preparation for my Podcast. I must be honest and say that having had a few drinks last night, I'm seriously considering coaching him to impersonate my Leicester accent for next week!
