The Definitive answer: put your candidates first

Published: 14 May 2008  Author: Graham Simons

Simply finding your candidates work is not enough — building meaningful relationships is crucial for success, according to the Best Accountancy Firm winner at the Recruiter Awards for Excellence 2008.

Developing long-term relationships is the main aim for Definitive Consulting, which was recognised by judges for its commitment to candidate care.

In considering a candidate’s career progress, the Swindon-based firm does not merely place a candidates in a role but takes a longer term approach. Staff ask candidates to provide them with their career goals so they can tap into their aspirations.

For Definitive Consulting, this has resulted in remarkable loyalty from those that use its services. Indeed 70% of new candidates sign up exclusively. They also boast a CV submission-to-interview ratio of 82% and have an offer-to-acceptance ratio of 86%.

Darren James, managing director at Definitive Consulting, told Recruiter: “Candidates are taken through the career management process at registration, which looks at the long-term goals and objectives of the individual, then, if relevant, current roles are discussed with the individual that match their criteria.

“We never submit candidates for roles without telling them, upload CVs to databases without permission or send their CV to anyone we haven’t discussed with them beforehand.

“Does it work? Absolutely — of the 175-plus candidates we placed with clients over the last 12 months through our various divisions, all of them are still with the clients we placed them with. Consultancy works when done properly.”
