Arab exodus
30-September 2009
The exodus of Arab talent is costing their home countries $1.57bn annually, according to a report by TalentRepublic.net. The report shows that 54% of Arab students don’t return home after studying abroad. Statistics obtained from the Arab League, ILO, UNESCO and other Arab and international organisations show that about 100,000 scientists, doctors and engineers leave Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Tunis, Morocco and Algeria each year, and 70% of the scientists do not return home, ...

Dear In-House Hannah...
30-September 2009
If I was In-House Hannah’s employer, I’d be asking myself the question: ‘Which adds more value, someone who spends her time copying and pasting names into her mobile, making her list look pretty with pictures or an experienced consultant who is going to network properly ie. get out and meet people?’ I’m sure Hannah has over 5,000 friends on Facebook as well as her ‘5,000 personally linked’ contacts. It rather begs the question: how many of those 5,000 contacts and friends ...

Jobcentres failing
30-September 2009
The UK’s Jobcentres aren’t working and must be urgently reformed to tackle rising unemployment, according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB). In a survey of 2,500 FSB members, 34% said they found Jobcentre Plus ineffective or very ineffective, while another 49% did not even know if it worked well or not. Fewer than 20% of small businesses said they used Jobcentre Plus to recruit, preferring to use advertising and recruitment agencies. With unemployment set to rise to 3m by ...

No ethics in this compromise to fit in here to end
30-September 2009
Neil Wilson’s article on industry trends in Recruiter, 2 September, was excellent. In my humble opinion the industry has needed to change for far too long, though I’m not entirely convinced that we need more research to tell us this. While we do need to build genuinely sustainable partnerships with our clients, contrary to Neil saying it’s solely the responsibility of recruiters, I do think that the clients have to take some responsibility here as well. They need to be open ...

Use agencies
30-September 2009
Employers can minimise the risk of hiring candidates that are ineligible to work in the UK by using agencies, according to recruiters. Attorney General Baroness Scotland was fined £5,000 last week for employing a housekeeper who was not legally allowed to work in the UK. The UK Border Agency said Baroness Scotland had taken the necessary steps to check Tongan Loloahi Tapui’s right to work but had not retained a copy of documents, as required by law. Luc Fountain, managing director at ...
