And finally… The BBC reports that a Mexican illegal immigrant was prevented entering the UK after a search of his luggage uncovered a good luck card for his ‘new life in the UK’. The man, arriving at Manchester Airport from Los Angeles, claimed he was on a brief visit to a friend who was opening his own restaurant in North- West England. However, he later admitted planning to work illegally after border officers found the card and pages of Mexican recipes.

Thank you for publishing the news item on the temp pay insurance scheme (Recruiter, 4 March, p8). My suggestion that the industry should have an ABTAtype insurance scheme to protect temporary workers’ pay if their recruitment agency goes bust was described as ‘not viable’ by the REC.
